HUMAN TRAFFICKING
MILITARY USE OF CHILDREN
POVERTY

Did you know that slavery still exists in the 21st Century? Human trafficking is essentially modern slavery and it is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world with estimated annual revenues of $5-$9 billion. This crime is defined as the recruiting, transforming, harboring or receipt of people for the purposes of slavery, prostitution, forced labor and servitude. The vast majority of victims are women and children but men are also trafficked. The victims are recruited using coercion, deception, fraud, abuse of power and outright abduction and are most commonly the most vulnerable and powerless minorities in a region or displaced persons such as runaways and refugees.

• An estimated 50,000 people are trafficked into the US every year

• 600,000 people are trafficked through international borders every year

• Trafficking ranks second, after drug smuggling and tying with arms dealing, in organized crime activities

• Immigration agents estimate that 10,000 women are being held in Los Angeles' underground brothels; this does not include the thousands of victims in domestic work, sweatshops or other informal industries

For every "Stop Human Trafficking" T-shirt or tank you buy, Global Recess will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Project to End Human Trafficking (PEHT). PEHT's work includes direct service to victims, educational outreach, anti-trafficking coalition building as well as collaborations with other national and international anti-trafficking organizations.
